Perhaps using Teams is not the way to go in which case I'm open to other options.

You can also see the Teams files in the SharePoint interface. There you have the ability to tinker with the permissions with a lot more granularity.

You can share specific files with the person who needs them. I guess though, over time we would end up a with a bit of mess of not knowing who has access to what files inside teams. In your traditional file server, the user would be able to see a list of folders and browse to what they want to access.

Maybe private channels might work for you - keep all the 'general' files in the general tab for ALL users and then create private channels for all the stuff you won't be sharing.

Wouldn't that mean everyone would have to be a member of every team pretty much? I suppose in theory that would work but it seems like not using teams as intended and potential for other issues to come up can't think of any at the moment though.

Yeah it's a kludge but I can't see another way to do it within the Teams app - you can use the open the document in Sharepoint option and set permissions there.

Teams is not designed for granular permissions like this. Maybe some day, but not now. Though you can customize permissions on the SharePoint end, Teams was never designed to support this, and that can turn into a management headache.

For that reason, and until Microsoft allows for more granular permissions, our org created a regular teams document library with granular permissions and linked subdirectories for and into each team, that way they get the collab features of Teams but the more robust permissions structure of SharePoint but under a single site. Wait, did I interpret this correctly? You're using a chat client in place of a file server????? That's not fair. Teams is just one interface to access the files, just like OneDrive is another, but the files are all in SharePoint.

Thats a fair point, but it's still an absolutely terrible means of replacing a file server, if what I'm reading regarding replacing the on-prem file server is accurate. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question. Adam CodeTwo.
